Rehabilitation Solution for a Severely Deteriorated Manhole
Hydrogen sulfide gases caused by sanitary sewer water and excessive inflow and infiltration were the culprits of the massive deterioration of this manhole in Montville, CT.
“In the summer of 2021, the Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA) was faced with an impending manhole failure,” noted Derek Albertson, Superintendent of the Wastewater Treatment Facility in Montville, CT. A Capacity, Management, Operation, and Maintenance (CMOM) related infrastructure inspection identified the issue with this infrastructure located along Connecticut Route 32, a main road artery within a busy intersection. “The concrete manhole chimney and main body were on the verge of collapse,” noted Albertson. The possibility of replacing and relocating the manhole was considered. Moving the manhole would require a 30-foot move and a 16-inch water line, including additional utility services, traffic control, and road reconstruction. This very costly option was not a desirable solution.
Contractors Savy & Sons, pre-vetted by the city and highly recommended, immediately responded to this perplexing situation and were able to provide a course of remedy. “This manhole was among some of the worst we have seen,” noted Gino Padewski, Savy and Sons Sales & Service Representative. As an Epoxytec certified applicator with extensive experience in the field of manhole rehabilitation, the Savy team was able to recommend rehab using Epoxytec’s CPP Sprayliner as an alternative to the replacement of the infrastructure.
CPP Sprayliner is a proven product that is designed specifically for highly aggressive enclosed, immersive environments like this Montville manhole. It is a two-component, 100% solids structural epoxy that has high strength with great acid resistance. In conjunction with Epoxytec’s epoxy-modified mortar, Mortartec Ceramico, used for resurfacing and repairs, the CPP Sprayliner would provide the rehabilitation and lining necessary for the extent of this deterioration. The pre-vetted status of Savy and Sons, along with their clear communication about the steps to be taken to eliminate significant risk, solidified the town’s decision to move forward.
The Savy team was onsite within a day to start the work. Following an initial Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey, Savy and Sons identified all potential subsurface hazards. The substrate was prepared by jackhammering to remove all spalling concrete, as well as water blasting in accordance with SSPC-SP 13/ NACE No. 6. Epoxytec’s Mortartec Silica and Ceramico were utilized for resurfacing and for repairs to the concrete. Finally, Epoxytec’s CPP Sprayliner was spray applied at 250 mils using a heated plural-component spray rig.
“The cured-in-place lining for repair, along with the injection of void filling/support material, made the manhole bulletproof,” raved Albertson.
The project was completed in six days from start to finish. Epoxytec’s CPP Sprayliner extended the life of this infrastructure and enabled what was initially considered an unsalvageable manhole to be rehabilitated. “The use of this coating technology allowed for a timely repair without complaints from the people in town about extended traffic holdups,” Albertson commented. “The guarantee of the work gave peace of mind that the manhole will no longer be a lingering nightmare for the WPCA personnel.”
